Hosting a Youth Exchange Student
Are you interested in becoming a Rotary Host Family? Please fill out the inquiry form and we will get in contact with you.
Hosting a Youth Exchange student offers Rotarians and local residents the opportunity to experience another culture within their own community. Local students and community members can contribute to the exchange experience.
A host family should be responsible, willing, and interested in welcoming a young person from another country into their home.
The most effective host families are:
Caring and respectful with each other
Flexible and able to adapt to having someone new in the home
Good humored and able to put a problem or situation into perspective
Patient and willing to work through common misunderstandings
Willing to engage in different activities and visit places outside the home
Interested in a variety of topics of conversation, culture, and recreation
The family has no financial remuneration; however, the student will receive a monthly allowance for his/her needs. We also pay for the school expenses.
Long-term exchange students must have more than one host family — preferably three different families — during their exchange. By living in the homes of several families, students are exposed to a variety of experiences in the host country and better understand the culture as a whole.
Estimated hosting time frame:
August 15th (est arrived) - January 1
January - March (Spring Break)
April - June
Vetting and Screening Process
1) Fill out the Host Family Inquiry form
2) A Local Rotainian will reach out and do a house visit and ask questions
3) Background Checks through the District
Every family member residing in the home over the age of 18 must first be vetted and trained as a Host Family Member. This includes completing the following:
Reference Checks (3 per family)
Criminal Background Check (IntelliCorp or RCMP) for each adult member of the family living at home (For US residents; each adult family member will be emailed a link to complete their own background checks. For this reason each person in the household must have their own email address listed on their application)
NSOR (National Sex Offenders Registry)
Once you completed the process, you will be part of the Honorary Rotary Exchange student group.
